Download and read online Shipping Operations Management in PDF and EPUB This book focuses on the management of ship operations, an activity that requires integrative knowledge and technical expertise that spans various disciplines. As such, ship operations personnel are expected to be well-versed with aspects of management, economics, engineering, technology and law. Further, ship operations management requires the ability to identify and neutralize threats and to manage risks and make decisions that will optimize costs and contribute to performance improvements. Despite the fundamental nature of ship operations management, no book has ever attempted to reconcile and compile a comprehensive body of knowledge, while pursuing a coherent, structured and systematic approach. This edited volume addresses that fundamental gap in the extant literature, and brings together a wealth of knowledge from experts in their respective fields. Concretely, it explores issues of organization, technical management, crewing and behavioral issues, chartering and post fixture, risk management, finance, legal aspects of international conventions and regulations, attainment of safety, security and marine insurance, as well as ocean governance and sustainability. As such, the book offers a vital reference guide for maritime companies and organizations, while also serving as a teaching supplement in academic and professional maritime programmes.

Download and read online Decision Modes in Complex Task Environments in PDF and EPUB Despite intense research on decision-making in action, we still know little about when decision-makers rely on deliberate vs. intuitive decision-making in decision situations under complexity and uncertainty. Building on default-interventionist dual-processing theory, this book studies decision-making modes (deliberate vs. intuitive) in complex task environments contingent on perceived complexity, experience, and decision style preference. We find that relatively inexperienced decision-makers respond to increases in subjective complexity with an increase in deliberation and tend to follow their decision style preference. Experienced decision-makers are less guided by their decision preference and respond to increases in subjective complexity only minimally. This book contributes to a developing stream of research linking decision-making with intra-personal and environmental properties and fosters our understanding of the conditions under which decision-makers rely on intuitive vs. deliberate decision modes. In doing so, we go one step further towards a comprehensive theory of decision-making in action.

Download and read online The Due Diligence in Maritime Transportation in the Technological Era in PDF and EPUB This book discusses the problem of sea carriers’ liability, with a particular focus on role of the technologies that have been employed to support maritime transport in recent decades. It examines the Hague Rules, providing an overview of the precedent standard of liability, its historical development up until its application, and its construction at the current time. To do so, it presents two exemplary studies from English and American case law, and analyzes the situations in which the courts have required the application of new technologies as part of the duties set in the current governing liability regime. Written in an easy-to-follow style, the book offers not only an unique overview of the applications of technologies in making ships both seaworthy and cargo-worthy, but also a practice-oriented guide to understanding and making decisions about sea carriers’ liability. It is intended for law practitioners as well as advanced graduate students and researchers in the field of maritime shipping, transport and insurance law

Download and read online H llentage auf See in PDF and EPUB Captain Phillips – ab 14.

Download and read online Geschichte und Zukunft der Europ ischen Identit t in PDF and EPUB English summary: In the early modern era European identity was expressed in the vision of Europe as a Christian republic. With the 18th century's enlightenment the idea of European culture developed. Europe's identity was its culture. The wars and crimes of the first half of the 20th century put an end to this certitude. Instead of the unifying European culture the project of European unification in the areas of economy, politics, society, education, science, culture etc. was born. Up to today no European identity or as former president of the European commission Jacques Delors said: ?Giving Europe a soul? has been created. European identity remains a challenge for the future. The integration and conflation through globalisation questions the paradigm of unity. Step by step this paradigm is replaced by that of cohesion in a globalising world. Thus European identity must rather be understood as cohesion in global plurality than as a unified entity. For the first time a history of European culture beginning with the 15th century, taking even older sources into account, until today is presented. This work gives a reliable base for examinations of future European identity.
