Download and read online Number Theory Modular Arithmetic in PDF and EPUB Remainder does not seem to be a big topic in school math. However, in competition math, it is. Almost every contest at middle school and high school level has remainder related problems. For example, in 2017 AMC 10B, out of total 25 problems, at least 3 are related to this topic: the 14th, 23rd, and 25th. Modular arithmetic is a branch in mathematics which studies remainders and tackles related problems. However, this important subject is not taught in schools. Consequently, many students rely on their intuition when attempting to solve such problems. This is clearly not the best situation. This book aims to provide a complete coverage of this topic at the level which is suitable for middle school and high school students. Contents will include both theoretical knowledge and practical techniques. Therefore, upon completion, students will have a solid skill base to solve related problems in math competitions.

Download and read online Competition Algebra in PDF and EPUB Algebra is taught from elementary school to college and beyond. Algebraic problems present a significant portion in all math competitions including MathCounts, AMC, AIME, USAMO and so on. Therefore, solving competition level algebraic problems is a must-master skills for every contest contender. Algebra includes a wide range of topics and techniques. Some of them may be related to advanced mathematical theorems and tools. Therefore, it is impossible to cover all of them in one book. However, middle school and high school level competitions usually do not require advanced mathematics. Instead, the emphasis is on the applications of basic algebraic skills in a flexible and effective way to solve complex problems. As a result, it is a wise strategy to thoroughly understand the most important topics and drill down into details of related solving techniques in order to improve one's skill and test performance. This book covers three basic but important topics: equation, sequence and function. While these topics are all taught in schools, there are some competition specific techniques which deserve a systematic discussion. Taking Vieta's theorem as an example. While polynomial transformation is a well known method to evaluate expressions such as $x_1 DEGREES2+x_2 DEGREES2$, there are several other powerful techniques. They can be used to evaluate some complex expressions in a more efficient and less error-prone way. These expressions can have high power such as $x_1 DEGREES{7}+x_2 DEGREES{7}$, or are asymmetric such as $5x_1 DEGREES3 + 3 x_2 DEGREES5$. In fact, the latter asymmetric expression can present a challenge to many students who only know the polynomial transformation method. In addition to expression evaluation, Vieta's theorem can also be used to solve some seemingly unrelated problems. Such problems are among top hits in various math competitions. Sequence is another good example. Most students understand the two basic types of sequences, namely, arithmetic and geometric. Though the vast majority of sequence related problems in math contests can be converted to these basic types, finding such conversion may be a demanding task which is usually not discussed in classrooms. Meanwhile, in order to become a strong competitor, one must also understand a few additional more complex sequences especially those defined recursively. They are beyond the scope of school textbooks, but are discussed in this book. The goal of this book is to give an organized in-depth discussion on competition level techniques. Fully understanding these techniques will help students to quickly recognize and solve these types of problems. It will also lay down a solid foundation for them to solve other problems whose solutions require these algebraic techniques as critical stepping stones. Please visit http: //www.ma

Download and read online Mathematics in Middle and Secondary School in PDF and EPUB The experience and knowledge acquired in teacher education courses should build important fundamentals for the future teaching of mathematics. In particular, experience in mathematical problem solving, and in planning lessons devoted to problem solving, is an essential component of teacher preparation. This book develops a problem solving approach and is intended to be a text used in mathematics education courses (or professional development) for preservice or inservice middle and secondary school teachers. It can be used both in graduate and undergraduate courses, in accordance with the focus of teacher preparation programs. The content of the book is suited especially for those students who are further along in their mathematics education preparation, as the text is more involved with mathematical ideas and problem solving, and discusses some of the intricate pedagogical considerations that arise in teaching. The text is written not as an introduction to mathematics education (a first course), but rather as a second, or probably, third course. The book deals both with general methodology issues in mathematics education incorporating a problem solving approach (Chapters 16) and with more concrete applications within the context of specific topics – algebra, geometry, and discrete mathematics (Chapters 713). The book provides opportunities for teachers to engage in authentic mathematical thinking. The mathematical ideas under consideration build on specific middle and secondary school content while simultaneously pushing the teacher to consider more advanced topics, as well as various connections across mathematical domains. The book strives to preserve the spirit of discussion, and at times even argument, typical of collaborative work on a lesson plan. Based on the accumulated experience of work with future and current teachers, the book assumes that students have some background in lesson planning, and extends their thinking further. Specifically, this book aims to provide a discussion of how a lesson plan is constructed, including the ways in which problems are selected or invented, rather than the compilation of prepared lesson plans. This approach reflects the authors’ view that the process of searching for an answer is often more important than the formal result.

Download and read online The Alberta High School Math Competitions 1957 2006 in PDF and EPUB Although there were some older contests in the Maritime region and in Lower and Upper Canada, the Alberta High School Mathematics Competition was the first and oldest in Canada to be run on a provincial scale. Started in 1957, the competition recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. These fifty years can be broken down to three periods, Ancient (1957--1966), Medieval (1967--1983) and Modern (1984--2006), with very distinctive flavors which reflect what was taught in the schools of the day. The first two periods are primarily of historical interest. During the Modern period, the talented problem committee was led by the world renown problemist Murray Klamkin, and composed many innovative and challenging problems. In this book you will find all the problems and answers for the first fifty years of the competition, up to 2005/2006 – and full solutions are provided to those from the Modern period, often supplemented with multiple solutions or additional commentaries. Taken together, this unique collection of problems represent an interesting and valuable resource for students today preparing for these types of mathematics contests. The Alberta High School Mathematics Competitions 1957 - 2006 : A Canadian Problem Book is published by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in collaboration with the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). It is the second volume in The Canadian Collection.

Publisher: Shambhala Publications

Download and read online Raising a Left Brain Child in a Right Brain World in PDF and EPUB Does your child: • Have impressive intellectual abilities but seem puzzled by ordinary interactions with other children? • Have deep, all-absorbing interests or seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of certain subjects? • Bring home mediocre report cards, or seem disengaged at school, despite his or her obvious intelligence? If you answered "yes" to these questions, this book is for you. Author Katharine Beals uses the term "left-brain" to describe a type of child whose talents and inclinations lean heavily toward the logical, linear, analytical, and introverted side of the human psyche, as opposed to the "right brain," a term often associated with our emotional, holistic, intuitive, and extroverted side. Drawing on her research and interviews with parents and children, Beals helps parents to discover if they are raising a left-brain child, and she offers practical strategies for nurturing and supporting this type of child at school and at home. Beals also advises parents in how best to advocate for their children in today’s schools, which can be baffled by and unsupportive of left-brain learning styles.
